Peepers, shorebirds, red maple blossoms and daffodils for miles, are just some of mother nature’s telltale signs that spring has fully sprung here on Nantucket. The coming of a new, warmer season gives us much to celebrate with so many joyful activities to experience across the island in the springtime.
As we all cautiously awake from a very different winter season into a better, but not quite normal, spring, we’re delighted to see the safe reopening of many of our beloved shops and restaurants. Although some restrictions across public spaces like indoor dining continue, we're excited to experience the inside of restaurants full once again. And, yes, we’ll be the ones waving at every table and smiling widely behind our masks.
Summer is truly the star when it comes to seasons on Nantucket. But if you’re looking for a slower, more relaxed pace, then springtime may be the vibe for you. Due to COVID, this year many seasonal residents and guests have chosen to stay on the island throughout the winter months, making things a little more lively than usual. Regardless, summer just can’t compete with quiet hum and the unique attractions only offered during the months of spring.
So let’s get right into it. Here are our 3 reasons why we absolutely love springtime on Nantucket.
#1: Witnessing the awakening of our natural habitat.
Whether it’s fishing, hiking, birdwatching, or just taking in the awe-inspiring views, there’s no better time to explore and experience the coming to life of our most unique habitats. With its comfortable temps, spring is the ideal season to explore the side of Nantucket often overlooked in the warmer, more bustling summer months. Consider picking up some lunch from Bartlett's Farm (now offering curbside) or Something Natural. Throw it in your backpack and spend the day walking the many trails maintained by the Nantucket Conservation Foundation.
#2: Celebrating a time-honored tradition.
It most certainly would not be spring on Nantucket without our cherished Daffodil Festival. A tradition that began way back in 1975 by the Nantucket Garden Club, leading to the official naming of “Nantucket Daffodil Week.” Activities include a flower show, hat show, and the famous car parade - where antique vehicles adorned with daffodils parade through the town centre. If you have not experienced this event, it’s a bucket list must. With the 2021 in-person festival cancelled, you’ll need to wait until next year for the full Daffy experience. #3: Ditch the car and grab a bike.
If you’re looking for a more sustainable means of travel, then biking is certainly your answer. Similar to #1, spring’s comfortable temps make biking at any time of the day a welcomed treat. With over 35 miles of bike paths, it’s no wonder that biking has become a favorite outdoor activity on the island.
