Ferry horns echoing up harbor, suitcases rolling along the cobblestones, furry friends of every color shaking off the sea mist, and the endless sounds of laughter. So much laughter. Yes, summer is indeed in full swing on Nantucket.
In addition to the visitors flocking to the amazing beaches, restaurants and shops, it’s also a busy time for our team across both our sales and rental properties. But in and between the showings and tenant check-ins, we’re still taking some time out to enjoy the unique splendor of Nantucket in the summertime.
A big part of that, for our team, is getting outdoors to take advantage of the gorgeous summer days. Going to the beach or the pool is a favorite pastime for most families visiting Nantucket. But what if you're someone we wants a little more excitement?
We wanted to share with you a few activities that you might not have considered but most definitely need to know about! Especially if a year of quarantine has got you feeling slightly adventurous.
Here’s our 3 things to try outdoors this summer:
#1: Kitesurfing.
Some say you’ve never really experienced the water until you’ve Kitesurfed. Definitely for the more adventurous, modern day Kitesurfing (or Kiteboarding) has been around since the 1990s. It continues to grow in popularity across the world including on Nantucket. Kitetucket, launching off of Pocomo Beach, has been around since 2012. They offer lessons with IKO (International Kiteboarding Organization) certified instructors. And their mission is “to promote and teach kiteboarding as a safe and fun sport for everyone.” We can get down with that! Learn more about Kitetucket’s camp, private and semi-private lessons.
#2: Surfcasting.
Is fishing your thing? We suggest taking advantage of the many unique shorelines across the island to try your hand at the very popular sport of Surfcasting (or surf fishing, shore fishing, beach fishing.) Done from the shallow beach waters, Surfcasting offers an experience like none other. Whether with friends or family, surfcasting is a great way to bond and learn more about the natural marine life in the waters of Nantucket. Check out Steve Tuna’s Fishing Adventures for a unique experience crafted with you in mind. Local guide, Steve “Tuna” Tornovish, provides an unforgettable exploration of Nantucket’s amazing coastline as you fish for bluefish, striped bass, false albacore and bonito.
#3: Sailing.
Want to feel the wind in your hair and the salt on your face as you glide through the calm waters of Nantucket Sound or the Harbor? Look no further than the Jetties Sailing Center. JSC offers a variety of options including sailboat rentals for experienced mariners, private and group sailing lessons, and kayak and SUP board rentals. Be sure to check out their memberships as well. Learn more at Nantucket Community Sailing.
