With the long holiday weekend upon us, it’s no surprise that most of us have fall activities on the mind. From apple picking to pumpkin spiced latte drinking, fall’s beauty and deliciousness could not come soon enough. After saying goodbye to an incredible summer, autumn’s many gems offer the happy boost we all need right now. Its slower pace and deeper connection with nature is what makes this shoulder season so appealing to so many. And to get you started with those plans, here are the 5 things we love to do on those long, fall Nantucket weekends.
#1: Enjoy a favorite restaurant.
Although many restaurants close down after the busy summer season, there are still a good handful that do stay open all year round. That makes the off season an ideal time to get those prime reservations at your favorite place or try something new. Some of our picks include Le Languedoc, Proprietors, The Beet, Queequeg’s and Sister Ship.
#2: Scallop with the family.
With recreational scallop season upon us, there is no better time than right now to enjoy this fun outdoor activity with the family. But before you head out, be sure to grab your recreational shellfish permit license available for residents and nonresidents. And you’ll definitely want to gear up for the weather. Head over to our friends at Tidal Creek Outfitters to get all the essentials. Scallop season on Nantucket runs through March 31, 2023.
#3: Go for a stroll.
We know the summer sunsets get all the attention but those deep reds and oranges grow ever more vivid and eye-catching as the days get shorter. And with a touch of pink and crimson it is worth the brisk walk just to witness its beauty. We recommend grabbing a sweater (and a camera!) and taking a stroll down peaceful Madaket Beach. This beach is just one of Nantucket’s natural beauties that really comes to life in the fall season.
#4: Shop Nantucket’s idyllic downtown streets.
Few can resist shopping along the island’s historic downtown streets. With everything from clothing and jewelry to household items and unique antique finds, you won’t leave empty handed. And fall’s slower, less crowded pace, gives you plenty of time to connect with our amazing shopkeepers. Some of our favorite shops include Nantucket Looms, Nathan Coe Gallery, Blue Beetle, The Haul Over and Eleish Van Breems Home.
#5: Rent a bike.
And rounding up our top 5 things we love to do in the fall is renting a bike! Tour the island's breathtaking bike paths on your time, at your pace. We recommend heading out the Polpis bike path to take in the autumn scenery of the moors, views of the harbor and those quiet foliage moments.
