Every fall, as the crisp autumn air settles over Nantucket, locals eagerly anticipate one of the island’s most cherished traditions: family scalloping season. From October 1st through March 31st, friends & families come together to harvest the bay scallops that have long been a symbol of Nantucket’s rich maritime history.
Scalloping is more than just a way to gather delicious shellfish—it's a communal experience that spans generations. Armed with waders or snorkel/dive gear, push rakes, and mesh baskets/bags, recreational scallopers wade into the shallow waters, scouring the sandy sea floor for the prized scallops. It's an activity that blends fun and learning, offering new residents or younger islanders the chance to develop an appreciation for Nantucket’s natural resources.
While family scalloping is allowed only in designated areas and during specific hours, the season provides an opportunity for both locals and visitors to take part in this unique tradition. The sweet, tender scallops gathered are not only a delicious reward but also serve as a reminder of the island's strong connection to the sea.
Whether you’re a seasoned islander or a visitor eager to try your hand, Nantucket’s family scalloping season is an unforgettable way to experience the island's vibrant coastal culture. Be sure to check local regulations, grab your gear, and enjoy this special Nantucket tradition!
